I recently returned from a successful buying trip. One stop I typically make is the Kandaka Shoju-en Bonsai Nursery in Takamatsu, Japan. It's one of Shikoku Island's oldest and most respected bonsai nurseries. A focal point in the nursery is the massive pine named "Dohyo-iri," which means sumo "ring-entering ceremony". Its lower branches spread out over the ground, giving it the appearance of a sumo wrestler entering the ring.
A winter walk through the cold house
Winter is the time to see the bones of your bonsai. Prepare for future shaping. Spring is on the way.
2024 in review and a toast to 2025!
2024 has been a terrific year at Kifu Bonsai, and I couldn't have done it without your support. The year began with an always inspiring trip to Japan, where I toured numerous private bonsai nurseries, ate excellent food, and met with Mr. Masakuni at MASAKUNI Co. Ltd. I also visited the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum, where I had the opportunity to see some of the bonsai I worked on decades ago as a young apprentice. Italian bonsai expert Mauro Stemberger hosted a select group of students for two sessions at the studio this past spring. Additionally, I have welcomed Ernest Pujol and Bob Danweber as new studio staff and have selected a handful of apprentices for 2025. A warm thanks to all who have visited the studio this year. Let's do it all again in 2025!
Another fantastic workshop weekend with Bonsai Dream MAURO STEMBERGER
Both sessions booked out. A great time was had by all at the Bring Your Own Bonsai workshop with bonsai star Mauro Stemberger. He will return this spring. Hope to see you there!
